JACKIE

He left. That’s not a bad thing. He left and didn’t force me to face him in the morning. That’s good, right? Right?

It was difficult to ignore the mass of celibate, old women in the waiting room gossiping that he stormed in without a shirt—because I stole it. I’m a crazy person! I stole his shirt and packed it in a box. To be fair, he stole my thong two years ago, and I still haven’t gotten it back. Who does that?

But . . . he listened. I don’t know why he listened to Derek of all people, but he’s giving me the space to process. Which, in hindsight, was a terrible idea. But I didn’t want to barter away my dignity for a night of passion only for me to feel empty the next morning.

I pace the length of my apartment, calling my mother’s cell phone over and over until she picks up. It’s not even dinnertime in Seattle right now!

“You keep calling me like that and I’ll have to get a restraining order against you,” she quips when she finally picks up.

“Call the cops, then,” I snap. She didn’t do anything to you. Simmer down! “Mom . . . I did something stupid.” The silence on the other end of the phone makes me want to puke.

“Is this something stupid that I’ll need to pack a suitcase for and get on the next flight out?”

“No.” Yes. Buy me a chastity belt for God’s sake!

“All right. So a glass of wine, then. Let’s hear it. What did my baby do that she considers stupid, huh? Did you accidentally walk out of Detweiler’s with a Snickers bar you didn’t pay for?”

“One, I don’t even like Snickers, and two, . . .” Deep breath in, deep breath out. “I slept with Chris last night.”

The gasp is so long that I could’ve birthed a baby in that wasted time.

“Shut up!” she shouts.

“Oh, it was bad. The sex wasn’t bad,” I clarify. Mentally, I’m taken back to last night, tangled in the sheets with him worshipping my pussy. “The sex was . . . magnificent. But we got into a fight.”

“The sex was that good and you got in a fight with him about it?”

I wish she were here so I can push her off the couch.

“No. We got in a fight before we did the sex. Mom, I should’ve been mad. I was mad. And then he started asking me what I wanted, and boom. My clothes were off.”

Mom laughs in a way I wish she wouldn’t. She’s so pro-open legs and get your heart broken. She can be willy-nilly with her heart all she wants. Mine has been broken only once, and I never want to feel that pain again.

“I’m not seeing the problem here. You’ve obviously moved past the engagement party—”

“I have not!” I retort. “You’re supposed to be on my side, woman! You’re supposed to hate him with me!”

“I don’t hate him,” she drawls, her easygoing laughter fading, and then the momma bear comes out.
