JACKIE
He left. Thatâs not a bad thing. He left and didnât force me to face him in the morning. Thatâs good, right? Right?
It was difficult to ignore the mass of celibate, old women in the waiting room gossiping that he stormed in without a shirtâbecause I stole it. Iâm a crazy person! I stole his shirt and packed it in a box. To be fair, he stole my thong two years ago, and I still havenât gotten it back. Who does that?
But . . . he listened. I donât know why he listened to Derek of all people, but heâs giving me the space to process. Which, in hindsight, was a terrible idea. But I didnât want to barter away my dignity for a night of passion only for me to feel empty the next morning.
I pace the length of my apartment, calling my motherâs cell phone over and over until she picks up. Itâs not even dinnertime in Seattle right now!
âYou keep calling me like that and Iâll have to get a restraining order against you,â she quips when she finally picks up.
âCall the cops, then,â I snap. She didnât do anything to you. Simmer down! âMom . . . I did something stupid.â The silence on the other end of the phone makes me want to puke.
âIs this something stupid that Iâll need to pack a suitcase for and get on the next flight out?â
âNo.â Yes. Buy me a chastity belt for Godâs sake!
âAll right. So a glass of wine, then. Letâs hear it. What did my baby do that she considers stupid, huh? Did you accidentally walk out of Detweilerâs with a Snickers bar you didnât pay for?â
âOne, I donât even like Snickers, and two, . . .â Deep breath in, deep breath out. âI slept with Chris last night.â
The gasp is so long that I couldâve birthed a baby in that wasted time.
âShut up!â she shouts.
âOh, it was bad. The sex wasnât bad,â I clarify. Mentally, Iâm taken back to last night, tangled in the sheets with him worshipping my pussy. âThe sex was . . . magnificent. But we got into a fight.â
âThe sex was that good and you got in a fight with him about it?â
I wish she were here so I can push her off the couch.
âNo. We got in a fight before we did the sex. Mom, I shouldâve been mad. I was mad. And then he started asking me what I wanted, and boom. My clothes were off.â
Mom laughs in a way I wish she wouldnât. Sheâs so pro-open legs and get your heart broken. She can be willy-nilly with her heart all she wants. Mine has been broken only once, and I never want to feel that pain again.
âIâm not seeing the problem here. Youâve obviously moved past the engagement partyââ
âI have not!â I retort. âYouâre supposed to be on my side, woman! Youâre supposed to hate him with me!â
âI donât hate him,â she drawls, her easygoing laughter fading, and then the momma bear comes out.
